1 a narrow road between fields or houses, especially in the countryside: a dusty lane leading to some cottages
2 the two or three parallel areas on a main road which are divided by painted lines to keep fast and slow traffic apart: the inside/outside lane: Use the outside lane for overtaking only. | the fast lane (=the lane for going past other vehicles)
3 used in the names of roads: a hotel in Park Lane
4 one of the narrow parallel areas marked for each competitor in a running or swimming race: The champion is running in lane five.
5 a line or course along which ships or aircraft regularly travel between ports or airports: busy shipping lanes
